“VATE!” a yell came from outside the infirmary. Vate awoke with a start. He realized he must have fallen asleep over his books. Yet again. He got up and rushed outside to see Ice kneeling by a girl who lay on the ground.
“Who is she?” he asked, looking at the unfamiliar girl.
“I don’t know,” Ice replied. “I found her in the woods by the spring. She was partially awake then and I helped her here, but she fell unconscious by the time we reached camp and I had to carry slash drag her here.”
Vate perked up his cat ears, wondering why Ice had been in the forest so late at night. “Let’s get her inside.”
Inside, the girl was laid on a bed. Vate and Ice made sure she was stabilized and checked her vitals. “Her vitals are fine, but she has a fever,” Vate announced when they were done. He looked over the girl. She was thin, a malnourished thin. But there was something about her, something special. “Milady Master should be made aware of this,” he said. “I’ll be back. I can trust you’ll care for her while I’m gone?”
“Of course,” Ice replied. “Go.” Vate nodded and left. As soon as the door shut, the girl stirred and opened her eyes. The faerie gasped when she saw the girl’s eyes. They were a deep purple.
“W-where am I?” a raspy voice came from the child’s throat.
“Safe,” answered Ice, giving the girl a cup of water. “Here, drink this; slowly now.” The girl tilted her head up to drink, then laid it back down. “What is your name?”
“Jinx,” the girl replied softly. “I used to be called by another name, Destiny. But that was before they threw me out, before they exiled me.”
“They?” Ice asked. “Who are they?” She was abhorred by the thought of leaving a girl as young as this in the forest to fend for herself.
“They… they…” the girl murmured, starting to fall unconscious again. “They… my family.” With those last words, her eyes closed and she was out again. At that moment, Vate and The Circus Master walked into the room.
“Any change?” asked Vate.
“She woke up for a moment,” Ice replied, then told them of what the girl had told her.
“Destiny,” The Circus Master said, looking at the girl. She turned to Ice, “What were you doing in the forest so late?”
“Eh, cleansing ritual,” Ice answered sheepishly. “The spring water is best for my wings.”
“Ah,” The Circus Master stated. “I hope you were on your guard. Bad things always seem to happen to you when you go into the forest.”
“I was, Milady Master,” Ice nodded, “that is how I found this girl.”
The Circus Master looked at the girl again. “Tomorrow we have a long day preparing for the upcoming show,” she said. “You had better get some rest. Goodnight.” She left the infirmary.
Ice turned to the girl. Her tanned skin, dark hair, and purple eyes pointed out that this girl was something out of the ordinary. “Vate, I think she’s a gypsy child. A Romani gypsy,” the fae said turning to the neko.
“A gypsy child?” Vate asked. “What could she have done for her family to send her away?” He scratched his cat ear. “Ice, you’d better go and get some sleep. Milady Master is right, you do have a long day tomorrow.”
“I… I want to sit up with her for a while, to make sure she doesn’t need anything if she wakes up again,” Ice said, stretching her wings. “May I Vate? Please?”
He gave her a small smile, “Yes. But, don’t stay here all night.”
“I won’t, unless I fall asleep,” Ice replied, returning his smile.
“Goodnight then,” he said.
“Goodnight,” she replied.

It was right before day break when Ice woke up. The chair wasn’t the most comfortable to sleep in and she had a crick in her wing, but other than that, she had slept well. She heard Vate messing around in the other room (?).
“I see you stayed here all night,” he said.
“Apparently,” she replied.
“Coffee?” he asked. She nodded, knowing that even though she didn’t like the flavor, it would give her the caffeine needed for the day. He left and soon returned with two mugs.
“Thank you,” she said taking it from him.
“So, she didn’t wake up again last night?” Vate asked, sitting in another chair near to Ice.
She shook her head, “No. But her fever broke before I fell asleep.” Ice touched the girl’s forehead with the back of her hand. The girl stirred and awoke. “Hello again,” Ice smiled gently for the girl.
“You’re real,” the girl said. “I-I thought you were just a dream.” The girl sat up and gasped. “You are a faerie! I thought that you were, but then again I thought I was having a dream.” She looked at Vate. “Oh my goodness! He’s a… he’s a…”
“Neko?” Vate asked. The girl nodded. “I am Vate,” Vate introduced himself, “and I have heard you are called Jinx and Destiny. Which do you prefer?”
“Destiny, but I have been called Jinx for the last five years of my life, so it really doesn’t matter,” the girl explained.
“Alright then,” he said, “I’ll call you Destiny.”
“I’m Alice, but everyone calls me Ice,” Ice introduced. “I’ll call you Destiny as well, okay?” Destiny nodded. “Last night
you said your family had banished you,” Ice said gently.
“Oh, that,” Destiny replied sadly. “Well, I guess I can tell you my story. I am a Romani traveler, what you call a gypsy,
as you might have already guessed. I was born into an extended family of many travelers which travel together. When I was four, I started to have visions; my grandmother getting sick, my uncle dying, my mother having another child. All of these came true. My family thought I had a gift of fortune telling. But soon it became apparent that it wasn’t just fortune telling. I… I… I could curse people, jinx them, as well. I could feel evil in other people. My dreams and visions of the future became more and more vivid. My nickname became Jinx. A few weeks ago, my family had the last straw. My family was going into a business deal with someone who owned a manor. I offended the owner by going into a vision and telling my family that she was a vixen. My family wouldn’t listen to me. They banished me, and for two weeks now I have been wandering the forest.”
“Oh, you poor darling,” Ice commented at the end of the story.
Destiny looked down, “It’s alright. I’m better off on my own.” She looked down, then back up to Ice and Vate. “What is this place?”
“This,” said Vate, “is the Underground Circus. One and all misfits are welcomed here.”
“I guess this is where I belong then,” Destiny replied, still a bit sadly.
“How old are you?” Ice asked.
“I’m twelve,” Destiny replied. This made Ice feel even more sorry for the girl.
“Well, Destiny,” Ice said. “I’m sure you are hungry, so why don’t we go and join the others in the circus for breakfast.”
“I’d like that!” she exclaimed.
“Vate,” Ice asked, “may this patient leave the infirmary?” He nodded and the two started off to the mess hall.

"Good morning Milady Master," Ice said, seeing The Circus Master inside the mess hall.
